For the past two years I have been studying a BA (Hons) Business Studies at Lincoln University. Wanting to grab every opportunity with both hands, I was particularly interested in the marketing areas of business. Yet, with the graduate market becoming increasingly more competitive, the need to gain experience in the work place is now vital, especially after so bluntly being told my £9,000 a year degree simply ‘wasn’t enough anymore’.
With the chance to take a year’s internship between my second and third year of study, and having done my research, I chose to approach The Write Impression as place I could gain this much needed experience everyone was talking about. Offering opportunities from producing press releases to e-marketing, they seemed to deliver a variety of PR and marketing aspects that I wanted to learn more about, whilst attempting to apply any current knowledge I had. Soon after contacting Caroline Foster, I met with her and partner, Kate Everett, and luckily they were able to offer me an internship as an ‘administrative assistant and junior writer’.
After my first week, I am learning what it takes to successfully run a commercial copywriting, PR and new media company; whilst being eased into different tasks from searching for press cuttings to producing client’s social media and a variety of other essential administration tasks (including making the tea). Knowing the next year will provide me with invaluable knowledge that cannot be learnt from a text book, I can safely say the early mornings and unfamiliar working days for a student will be worth it.
